Abbott Elementary Season 4 DVD Review

The fourth season is a step up from the shortened third season.
Willard R. Abbott Public School teachers Janine, Gregory, Melissa, Jacob and Barbara, Janitor Mr. Johnson and Principal Ava are back for a 22 episode fourth season. This time around, there are storylines involving class pets, holidays, a bus strike, the golf course, mentoring, Ava’s father, a Science Fair, budgets (and money woes), Gregory getting a second job, karaoke, a potential Principal shake-up, a field trip, and more.
After the show’s weakest season (three), the critically acclaimed workplace returns to form with a full fourth season. While Quinta Brunson’s workplace sitcom does feel as if it wearing thin in certain regards (the tired mockumentary style and Janine and Gregory’s frankly boring relationship) and is on the verge of exhausting its own premise (as tends to be the case with most any sitcom), there’s still life left in this series as it explores everything from gentrification to education. Yes, it’s a comedy at heart, but the series is never afraid to tackle important issues (even if it’s in a comedic fashion) all while making sure it never loses sight of focusing on the core characters.
Perhaps the most buzzed about aspect of this season is the “Volunteers” episode which is a crossover with the long-running cult favorite “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.” While that may sound bizarre on paper, it actually worked quite well as writer Garrett Werner manages to give every character their moment while also staying true to both series.
