Top 10 Netflix Original Films

With Netflix hyping up their forthcoming original film “The Rip,” I thought I’d take a look back at the now 11 year history of Netflix Original Films. Let’s face it, the streamer dishes out a lot of disposable, forgettable, and downright awful films, but each year they manage to put out at least a few gems (or acquire some masterpieces). Below I have posted my 10 personal favorites.
1. Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood- Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague” is another great Netflix film release, but his semi-autobiographical animated story “Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” is wonderful and woefully underappreciated.
2. Tick, Tick…Boom!- One of the very best movie musicals of the past 20 years.
3. Springsteen On Broadway- Those of us that were unable to see the show on Broadway were fortunate enough to get a filmed version. A must for any Springsteen fan.
4. Marriage Story- Noah Baumbach’s masterpiece.
5. The Power Of The Dog- Jane Campion reinvented the western with this psychological character piece.
6. Train Dreams- A quiet, contemplative gem about nature, change, time, and loss.
7. Roma- Alfonso Cuarón’s personal 70’s Mexico set drama remains a benchmark for Netflix originals.
8. The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar And Three More- Wes Anderson returns to the world of Roald Dahl and turns 4 of his stories into 4 magnificent short films that have been collected together.
9. 22 July- Paul Greengrass wrote and directed this horrifying film about the 2011 Norway attacks. This one doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
10. Cam- The last spot could have gone to a number of films like “The Killer,” “The Irishman,” or the underseen martial arts film “The Night Comes For Us,” but I opted to go with this eerie, trippy, and underrated horror film about a cam girl.
