Ranking The Tron Film/TV Franchise

In honor of the home video release of “Tron: Ares” today, I thought I would pay tribute to one of my personal favorite franchises by ranking the films and TV series. End of line.
1. Tron- Perhaps one of the nerdiest films ever made. It never feels like much of a Disney film, but rather a visually groundbreaking and ahead of its time tale about computers, business, technology, freedom, and authoritarianism.
2. Tron: Legacy- 28 years after the original, fans were treated to a sequel that quickly became a cult favorite. From Daft Punk’s incredible score to the new characters, this is the gold standard of how to do a legacy sequel (which are seldom done well).
3. Tron: Uprising- Had this animated series gone on to another season, it could have very well been ranked higher. Unfortunately, just as the show started taking off, it ended. I hope someday we get some sort of wrap-up or at least more stories with characters like Beck and Paige.
4. Tron: Ares- Truth be told, I’m just happy we got another sequel. It may have underperformed greatly at the box office, but there’s still hope it finds new life on Disney+ and home video. Sure, it’s a bit of a bummer the connections to Legacy were minimal, but this was still a blast to watch (especially on the big screen in 3D). The sequel has a real sense of scale, the action is epic, the homages are well done, the Nine Inch Nails score slaps, and there’s more world building which is where this franchise has always succeeded.
