Lippy The Lion And Hardy Har Har- The Complete Series Blu-ray Review

“Lippy The Lion And Hardy Har Har” entertains.

1962’s “Lippy The Lion And Hardy Har Har” is another Hanna-Barbera show that was part of “The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series.” The series, as you probably guessed, revolves around the adventures of Lippy (the optimistic lion) and Hardy Har har (the pessimistic hyena who never laughs). The two are polar opposites, but somehow still hang around each other. The series tends to have a number of different storylines. The wandering duo frequently try to get riches or food, pretend to be people they aren’t, help others (human or animal), try to land work/odd jobs (be it babysitting, exterminators, bird catching, etc.), are castaways, stow away, embark on a mission to capture someone or something, or have troublesome run-ins with everyone from a pirate and a mad scientist to an alien and a penguin.

The series is made up 52 episodes which are as follows: 1. See-Saw 2. Water-Melon Felon 3. Scare To Spare 4. Gulp And Saucer 5. Map Happy 6. Smile The Wild 7. Charge Of The Fright Brigade 8. Film Flam 9. Gunflighter 10. Hick Hikers 11. A Thousand And One Frights 12. Double Trouble 13. Laugh A Loaf 14. Genie Is A Meanie 15. Banks For Everything 16. Fiddle Faddled 17. Kidnap Trap 18. Witch Crafty 19. Gas Again 20. Horse And Waggin 21. Baby Bottled 22. Hard Luck Hardy 23. Show Use 24. Injun Trouble 25. Mouse In The House 26. Crazy Cat Capers 27. Phoney Pony 28. Egg Experts 29. Rabbit Romeo 30. Bird In The Hand 31. Legion Heirs 32. Hoots And Saddles 33. Monster Mix-Up 34. Bye-Bye Fly-Guy 35. Wooden Nickels 36. Two For The Road 37. King’s X 38. Amusement Park Lark 39. T For Two 40. Tiny Troubles 41. Flood For A Thought 42. Hocus Focus 43. Shamrocked 44. Ole Fuddy Duds 45. Chow You Feelings 46. Easy Doesn’t It 47. Drop Me A Lion 48. Map Sap 49. Shark Shock 50. No Spooking Allowed 51. Me-My-Mine 52. Together Mess

“Lippy The Lion And Hardy Har Har” may not be one of the most well known Hanna-Barbera cartoons, but it is significantly better than the two other “The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series” series “Wally Gator” and “Touche Turtle And Dum Dum.” The dynamic between Lippy and Hardy is what really works here. They shouldn’t be venturing around together but they are. Lippy even tries to help Hardy have a brighter outlook on life as he is always worrying about everything (hence his catch phrase “Oh dear, oh my”). It’s a strange dynamic, but it somehow works.

Plot wise, the stories are pretty basic, but there’s more of a variety of adventures as mentioned above. A lot of the time it’s the wrong place, wrong time (including some mistaken identity instances), but the two are often just trying to survive out on the road.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.33:1 1080p. How does it look? Much like “Wally Gator,” this set has been remastered from the best available film elements. The video quality varies. Episodes like “Film Flam” have sharper image and colors while episodes like “Shamrocked” are in rougher shape and appear more faded and grainy. Warner Archive did the best they can and that’s really all you can ask for.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? For the most part the audio is clean, but episodes such as “Show Use” sound a bit flatter and more muted.
