Top 10 Films Of 2025

2025 turned out to be a rather rewarding year for cinema. There was a great deal of variety across the board (especially when it came to indies). Truth be told, it was challenging to narrow it down to 10. Any number of films could have taken the last couple spots. As per usual, I still have a few films left to see. I will update my list accordingly if any of those films were to make my list.
1. One Battle After Another- Was there ever a doubt? Not only does PTA’s topical, thrilling, and ambitious film rank as one of his best, but this was easily the best of the year (and it’s not even close).
2. Grand Theft Hamlet- The best film about the COVID era to date. It’s a creative tale about art, chaos, loneliness, and community.
3. Freaky Tales- This inventive Oakland based anthology tale has future cult movie written all over it.
4. Train Dreams- A deep, quiet, and introspective gem.
5. The Life Of Chuck- A beautiful life affirming adaptation of a Stephen King story that is told in reverse.
6. Bob Trevino Likes It- An emotional and tearjerking story about connections. More people should know about this one.
7. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You- Rose Byrne is a revelation in this visceral drama about mental health and motherhood.
8. Tron: Ares- Were there better films this year? Sure, but this is a personal pick. In an age when franchises have been milked dry, Tron still feels like a rare special event. It’s niche, nerdy and continues to be a cinematic visual spectacle filled with exciting world building. It’s a shame this third entry underperformed at the box office as we are unlikely to see any Tron films or shows anytime soon.
9. Nouvelle Vague- Richard Linklater crafts an infectious story about the making of Godard’s “Breathless.”
10. Lurker- A surprising psychological story about celebrity, obsession, fandom, and integrity.
Notables: “Cloud,” “The Perfect Neighbor,” “Bugonia,” “Secret Mall Apartment,” “Where To Land,” “Eephus,” “The Legend Of Ochi,” “Dead Mail,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” “Friendship,” “Karate Kid: Legends,” “Predator: Killer Of Killers,” “Eternity,” “Twinless,” “One To One: John And Yoko,” “The Fantastic 4: First Steps,” “Superman,” “Americana,” “The Lost Bus,” “The Long Walk,” “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” “Dog Man,” “The Smashing Machine,” and “Companion.”
