10 Movies That Deserve Sequels

Not everything needs a sequel, but some films set up a universe that is ripe for exploration. Below I have listed 10 films that I feel are deserving of a sequel.
1. The Rocketeer- Of all of the comic book films out there, “The Rocketeer” remains my favorite. Director Joe Johnston perfectly captured the comic series by Dave Stevens. Disney has had sequels in development in the past, but they’ve all been canceled for one reason or another. It would be nice to see Billy Campbell strap on the jetpack one more time (or at least pass the torch as it were).
2. The Last Starfighter- If there was ever a film crying out for a franchise, it’s this one. There’s so much potential here especially given how popular video games are these days.
3. Dick Tracy- Warren Beatty’s adaptation of Chester Gould’s comic strip is a fun, colorful and faithful take on the classic Detective character. From what I understand, Beatty owns the rights to make new Tracy films or shows, but hasn’t. Now would be the perfect time to make a sequel (or a reboot).
4. Solo: A Star Wars Story- The most underrated Star Wars films ends with so many enticing elements. You want to see more early Han and Chewie adventures, you want to see Maul’s Crimson Dawn syndicate, and you really want to see where Qi’ra’s arc is going. We may never get a follow-up in film or TV form, but we can hope.
5. Big Trouble In Little China- Who doesn’t want more Jack Burton adventures?
6. The Guest- The ending of director Adam Wingard’s thriller leaves it wide open for a sequel.
7. Trick ‘r Treat- I don’t know how a sequel hasn’t happened yet. Sam has become a Halloween icon (and a Spirit Halloween staple) and the film grows in cult status year after year.
8. The Mask- No, I am not counting “Son Of The Mask.” I am talking about a direct sequel to the Jim Carrey starring 1994 mega hit. I’d even be down for a reboot that is darker and more comic accurate (with or without Carrey).
9. Escape From L.A.- We need more Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. Period.
10. Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow- This 2004 film has become somewhat forgotten over the years, but I for one would love to see more adventures in this universe. I’d even settle for audio dramas or comics.
