Top 5 Doctors In Doctor Who

With a new season of “Doctor Who” kicking off April 12th on Disney+, I thought I would celebrate the show’s return with a new list. I pondered ranking all of The Doctors, but placing them all proved too difficult so I opted for a top 5 instead. Truthfully, I love all of The Doctors. Not only does each actor bring something new to the table, but they each manage to make the iconic character their own. Sure, some of the eras were better than others, but the casting was always excellent in my humble opinion. Without further adieu, allons-y!

1. 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston)- It’s often said that your first Doctor tends to be your favorite and that certainly holds true for me. Back in 2006, the then named Sci-Fi Channel aired the first season of the 2005 series (AKA New Who). From the start of “Rose,” I was hooked. Christopher Eccleston was the perfect actor to usher in a new era. He often gets overlooked because he only starred in a single season, but it’s still my personal favorite season to date.

2. 4th Doctor (Tom Baker)- After seeing Eccleston’s run, I devoured everything “Doctor Who.” Obviously, I was aware of the sci-fi TV franchise prior to New Who, but hadn’t dug into it. Tom Baker’s Doctor is often named the best Doctor and it’s hard to argue with that. He elevated the entire series with his weird, captivating, and eccentric performance. He was also The Doctor longer than any other actor.

3. 6th Doctor (Colin Baker)- Colin Baker’s Doctor is far and away the most underrated. His era is often criticized for poor writing and while it’s true some of his episodes were less than stellar, there’s a lot to like about his run. The 6th Doctor era was darker and more adult and even Colin’s performance as The Doctor was edgier. He was ahead of his time. For those looking to experience more of the 6th Doctor’s short run, seek out the Big Finish audio dramas in which he reprised his role as The Doctor. He has many of the very best DW audios out there.

4. 10th and 14th Doctor (David Tennant)- When it comes to New Who, David Tennant is the name that comes up the most. His 10th Doctor era was easily the most popular and he is many fan’s favorite Doctor. You can tell the actor relishes every moment in the role. He even came back for a series of specials as the 14th Doctor!

5. 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee)- The 5th spot could have easily gone to Sylvester McCoy, Patrick Troughton, or Ncuti Gatwa, but, in the end, Pertwee gets the honor. Although his Doctor was largely Earthbound, his James Bondian take was a refreshing change of pace for the series.
