10 Thoughts On The 2025 Academy Awards

With the 2025 Oscars having now wrapped, I have 10 thoughts about the show.

1. What a way to kick off the show! Ariana Grande belting out “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” followed by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande singing “Defying Gravity” was beautifully moving and brought people to tears!

2. Conan O’Brien brought back the fun as this year’s host. The jokes, the bits (especially the Adam Sandler one) had me smiling the whole time he was on stage. Bring him back next year!

3. Kieran Culkin is always a character and his speech about his wife and future children was hilarious.

4. Most of the time, the best films hitting theaters these days are indie films and indie darling Sean Baker has been putting out gems for 25 years now. The filmmaker got his due this year with 4 Oscar wins for Best Original Screenplay, Editing, Director and Best Film. His speech about movie theaters was lovely too.

5. In tribute to Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the Oscars put on quite a show with a James Bond medley featuring Lisa, Raye, and Doja Cat singing “Live And Let Die,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” and “Skyfall.” Margaret Qualley even showed up to dance! As a longtime Bond fan, this was a joy to behold.

6. Very happy to see “I’m Still Here” win Best International Film. Well deserved.

7. I understand there’s only so much time, but it baffles me that the In Memoriam segment continues to leave out so many beloved artists. This year it was Tony Todd and Michelle Trachtenberg to name a couple.

8. It’s no secret that horror rarely gets recognized by the Oscars so it’s rather incredible that “The Substance” was not only nominated for 5 awards, but managed to win for Best Makeup And Hairstyling.

9. I love a good upset. Demi Moore was the frontrunner for Best Actress, but Mikey Madison pulled out the win for “Anora.”

10. “Anora” winning Best Picture is an inspiring and important win for indie cinema.
