10 Underrated Series

In the peak TV era (and even before that), it is not uncommon for series to come and go. Some are lost with time, some vanish after airing, some end too soon and others never received the audience they so richly deserved. I wanted to spotlight 10 underrated series that are absolutely worth seeking if you have yet to watch them. On with the list!

1. Carnivàle- This is the case of a serialized series that came out too soon. It likely would have thrived in the streaming era and could have found a bigger audience. As is, this strange, slow-burn HBO series is still worth a must see even if it ended just as it was peaking.

2. Man To Man With Dean Learner- “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace” is one of the greatest comedy series of all-time, but did you know there was a spin-off of sorts? This 6 episode spoof of chat shows is nothing short of hilarious. Richard Ayoade and Matthew Holness are true masters of comedy.

3. Tron: Uprising- We all know “Tron” and “Tron: Legacy,” but this animated series should be more well known. The animation style is unusual, but it grows on you. More than that though, this is a perfect companion piece to ‘Legacy’ and provided a deeper exploration of The Grid.

4. Perpetual Grace, LTD- The best show you have never seen. This oddball neo-noir is a wholly original series that features an all-star cast that included the likes of Ben Kingsley, Terry O’Quinn, Luis Guzman and Jimmi Simpson.

5. Reaper- In a perfect world, this supernatural comedy series starring Ray Wise as The Devil would have ran at least 10 seasons. Alas, it lasted only 2 seasons. One of the cancellations that truly hurt.

6. Godless- With the recent resurgence of westerns, more western fans need to scope out “Godless.” Not only is it one of the best shows Netflix has ever done, it’s always one of the best shows of the past decade.

7. Caprica- Sci-fans love to heap praise on “Battlestar Galactica” and deservedly so as it’s one of the best series of all time. The prequel series “Caprica” was a bit of a slow burn, but it sure took off as it progressed. Unfortunately, the series was buried by SyFy and never really got a chance. It’s a shame because there was so much potential here.

8. Psychoville- Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are most well known for “The League Of Gentlemen” and “Inside No. 9,” but this multi-genre comedy might be their finest work. The sharp writing, unique cast of characters and unpredictable storylines made for an unforgettable TV viewing experience.

9. I’m With Busey- If you were watching this mockumentary reality series on Comedy Central in 2003 you were witnessing comedy gold. To my knowledge, this show has never been released on physical media or on any streaming service. The world needs to see Gary Busey doing weird, weird things.

10. Frisky Dingo- Adam Reed’s “Archer” was a giant hit, but this proto “Archer” series by Adam Reed and Matt Thompson about a supervillain (Killface) was even better. Sadly, this Adult Swim series has always gone under-the-radar.
