Top 5 Tim Burton Films

With “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” out this week, it felt like the right time to take a look back at the work of Tim Burton. Below I have listed my 5 personal favorites from his filmography. Just to note- “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is not included as he did not direct that film contrary to popular belief.
1. Ed Wood- Tim Burton’s masterpiece. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are at the top of their game here in this ode to a passionate filmmaker responsible for creating some very bad but beloved cult movies.
2. Beetlejuice- This horror-comedy is a true original and perhaps the best representation of Burton’s style and comedic sensibilities. The pitch perfect ensemble cast led by Michael Keaton doesn’t hurt either.
3. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure- Burton’s debut feature film starring Paul Reuben’s oddball titular character was a funny, creative, and sometimes downright terrifying cult comedy all rolled into one.
4. Batman- You can certainly make a case for the bizarre “Batman Returns” which feels all too relevant in this day and age, but the influence of this 1989 comic book movie cannot be denied. Not only did Batmania sweep the nation, but Burton helped usher in a new era in which comic book movies could work on the big screen.
5. Big Fish- It was a toss up between “Edward Scissorhands” and “Big Fish” for the fifth spot, but this heartfelt and surreal father-son story ultimately won out.
