The Crow 4K UHD Steelbook Review

“The Crow” is a seminal 90’s comic book movie.
Based on the comic book series by James O’Barr, 1994’s “The Crow” is forever linked to the tragic death of star Brandon Lee, but the movie itself has gone on to become a cult movie (and goth) classic.
The David J. Schow and John Shirley scripted tale begins in a rundown and rainy Detroit with the horrific murder of Eric Draven and Shelly by T-Bird and his gang. Eric and Shelly were set to marry the following day on Halloween. A year passes and Eric is resurrected from the dead with his soul being at unrest. His new life is mysteriously linked to a Crow. After learning about his wife’s fate, Eric seeks revenge against the T-Bird and crime lord Top Dollar. Elsewhere in the story are subplots about Sarah (a child who is often looked after by Eric and Shelly) and Sgt. Albrecht ( a kind cop who gets caught up in this saga).
With a new version of “The Crow” due out in August, Paramount has released a new 4K disc of this now classic story about love and revenge. The story may be simplistic, but director Alex Proyas created a dark, violent, stylish and atmospheric film that has stood the test of time. Yes, it may owe a lot to 1989’s “Batman,” but Proyas creates his own unique cinematic world here while also exploring O’Barr’s mythology and his take on the afterlife.
Brandon Lee’s performance is what really makes the movie work as well as it does. He gives the character of Eric Draven a real personality but also never shies away from the dramatic moments involving his traumatic past. To say it was a really original and inspired performance is an understatement. Really, the entire cast turns in noteworthy performances especially Ernie Hudson (Sgt. Albrecht), David Patrick Kelly of “The Warriors” fame as T-Bird, Rochelle Davis as Sarah, and the always underrated Michael Wincott as the creepy Top Dollar.
