Good Burger 2 Blu-ray Review

“Good Burger 2” will appeal to fans of the first cult classic film.

In this sequel to 1997’s “Good Burger” (which itself was based on a sketch series from “All That”), Dexter is down in the dumps. He’s a failed entrepreneur who burned bridges with his sister and he is now currently without a home. Luckily, his old pal Ed hires him back at Good Burger and lets him stay at his home with his family. Yes, Ed is now a husband and a father to children (including Ed 2 who also works at the now Ed owned Good Burger). Dexter discovers plenty of new faces at the burger joint including an elderly woman (Ruth), twins Mindy and Cindy, GM (Mr. Jensen), and his own niece Mia (whom he is trying to make amends with) and 1 familiar face (Fizz). The plot comes into focus when Dexter learns that MegaCorp is interested in making Good Burger a global franchise. Dexter convinced Ed to make the deal, but, of course, the deal backfires in their face. The MegaCorp CEO (Katt) is actually planning on turning Good Burger into Mega Good Burger which will be entirely employed by Ed robots. Can Dexter and Ed save the company?

For anyone that grew up on the original “All That” and the first “Good Burger” film (like myself), this Paramount+/Nickelodeon movie was definitely made for you. While there’s plenty of cornball nostalgia and callbacks to be had here, the sequel still manages to deliver in the laugh department. The surreal moments, Ed’s goofy shenanigans, and Ed’s family (which adds a fun new dimension) make the sequel worthwhile. No, this is not high art and it never pretends to be. It’s merely a diverting oddball comedy that takes viewers down memory lane.

Making a sequel years after the original is always tricky, but both Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell step back into the roles of Dex and Ed as if no time has passed. Thompson may have gone on to have the bigger career, but Kel Mitchell was always funnier and more talented. Once again, Mitchell steals the show here and single handedly makes the sequel work as well as it does. His comedic timing is just so spot on. In terms of the new cast members, Alex R. Hibbert deserves praise as Ed 2. He completely nails the character and has wonderful chemistry with Kel Mitchell to boot. Naturally, there’s plenty of delightful cameos sprinkled throughout but no spoilers here.

The “Good Burger 2” Blu-ray will be released March 26, 2024.
