Top 10 Films Of 2023

2023 may not have been the splashiest year for cinema, but there was a nice variety of films to be sure. Below I have listed my personal 10 favorites alongside a slew of notable favorites. Note: As per usual, there are a few stragglers left to see. I will update my list accordingly if there are any changes to be made.
1. Dream Scenario- A wildly original movie for modern times that features Nicolas Cage in peak form.
2. Godzilla Minus One- It’s a great time to be a Godzilla fan. Not only do you have the MonsterVerse films and TV series in the U.S., but Japan has been putting out amazing Godzilla films as of late with “Shin Godzilla” and now “Godzilla Minus One.” This entry arguably has the best characterization in the entire franchise not to mention an absolutely ferocious depiction of the Big G.
3. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse- Hot take- I wasn’t the biggest fan of “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.” This sequel, however, blows the first entry away. It’s an ambitious and visually dazzling animated feature that gives the core characters more depth AND tackles origin stories and canon in a decidedly unique fashion.
4. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie- A deeply intimate and emotional documentary film.
5. The Zone Of Interest- A truly haunting film.
6. Showing Up- A small but affecting story about art, family, and nature.
7. Oppenheimer- Christopher Nolan’s most artistic and mature film to date.
8. The Holdovers- Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti make magic together once again.
9. American Fiction- A clever, intelligent, and funny look at writing, culture, stereotypes, family, and a whole lot more. Jeffrey Wright is great as per usual.
10. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret- Judy Blume’s classic coming-of-age book gets a near perfect big screen adaptation. This film should be talked about way more.
Notables: “Perfect Days,” “Monster,” “Lynch/Oz,” “Robot Dreams,” “Shortcomings,” “Past Lives,” “Saw X,” “Creed 3,” “Dungeons And Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Evil Dead Rise,” “It Ain’t Over,” “Blackberry,” “The League,” “The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar” and “The Rat Catcher,” “Air,” “The Killer,” “Reality,” “You Hurt My Feelings,” “Dreamin’ Wild,” “Poor Things,” and “Dumb Money.”
I spent time in the cinemas only twice in 2023. I saw a cinematic version of an ambitious, local TV series (content from the first several episodes edited to be a so-called movie) in one cinema in a nearby city, and Sound of Freedom at another cinema within my city.
