Matilda 4K UHD Steelbook Review

“Matilda” is a 90’s family movie classic.

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, “Matilda” revolves around the titular 6 ½ year old girl. Matilda is one of a kind. She’s super smart, curious, caring, and also happens to develop telekinetic powers. Unfortunately, Matilda’s life is full of heartache as she lives with her uncaring parents and dopey brother. Her dad is a real piece of work as he earns a living as a dishonest used car salesman that is being investigated by the FBI. When her father reveals that Matilda can finally go to school, she’s elated…until she discovers the school is run by a psychotic former Olympian Principal (Agatha Trunchbull) who hates children with a fiery passion. On the plus side, Matilda does manage to meet a teacher (Ms. Honey) who changes her life completely. With her newfound powers, Matilda just might be able to turn her life around and maybe get some sweet revenge against the monsters in her life.

Forget about the 2022 musical version, 1996’s “Matilda” is the only version you need to see. It’s been 27 years since the film’s release and it still holds up to this day. It’s an edgy PG rated family film that is not only an emotional rollercoaster ride, but a perfect adaptation of the Roald Dahl story in that it maintains the whimsy, eccentricity, and heart of the source material.

What really struck me this time around is that director Danny DeVito (who should really helm more movies by the way) treats the film like a fairy tale. It’s set in the real world in live-action form, but it’s also fantastical and exaggerated (particularly with the villainous Trunchbull and Matilda’s powers). The film also closes out with a happy ending that feels entirely earned given what Matilda has had to endure.

The cast is great across the board. Pam Ferris gives one of the best and most underrated villain performances as Trunchbull. Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman (who were married at the time) play Matilda’s parents here in a bit of stunt casting that works exceedingly well. Mara Wilson was everywhere in the 90’s and was easily one of the best child actors of the decade. This film really shows that with her charismatic performance. Embeth Davidtz (Ms. Honey) and the late Paul Reubens (as an FBI agent in a small part) also shine in their respective roles.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.40:1 2160p. How does it look? This is a clean transfer that represents a nice upgrade from the Blu-ray (although it may not quite be as shiny and new as some 4K catalogue titles).

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? The Atmos track certainly delivers. David Newman’s music cues are particularly lively here.
