10 Essential Summer Movies

With it being the 4th of July and summer, why not take a look back at some of the greatest films set during summer? Note: This list is in no particular order.
1. The Sandlot- What’s more summer than baseball? This enduring family classic is one of the films that best encapsulates the season as a whole.
2. Stand By Me- One of the best Stephen King story adaptations and one of the best coming-of-age movies.
3. American Graffiti- Another coming-of-age classic? I can’t help it if some of the greatest summer films are coming-of-age tales! This George Lucas directed classic remains a staple of the genre.
4. Jaws- Summer is synonymous with swimming…unless you’re afraid to go in the water because you saw “Jaws.”
5. National Lampoon’s Vacation- The ultimate movie about a family summer vacation that doesn’t go as planned.
6. The Kings Of Summer- A relatively obscure coming-of-age summer movie that deserves far more attention.
7. Summertime- For the classic film lovers out there, this bittersweet and picturesque romance starring Katharine Hepburn is worth seeking out.
8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre- Daylight horror at its finest.
9. Ghost World- For the indie film crowd out there, director Terry Zwigoff’s 2001 cult classic about change, adulthood, and friendships represents the not so sunny side of summer.
10. Jazz On A Summer’s Day- Concerts and live music are a big part of the summer season and this documentary/concert film showcasing jazz greats is well worth tuning into.
