Police Story 3: Super Cop 4K UHD Review

“Police Story 3: Super Cop” offers up top notch action.
In “Police Story 3: Super Cop (AKA “Supercop” in the U.S.), Hong Kong Detective Kevin Chan (the titular Supercop) is assigned to work with Chief of Security Jessica Yang for an operation that involves the two going undercover to infiltrate drug lord Chaibat’s operations. Kevin’s first order of business is to bust his right hand man (Panther) out of prison. After that, Panther meets Kevin’s family (all undercover agents) which includes Jessica who poses as Kevin’s sister. From there on out, the two become entangled in dangerous situations involving heroin dealers, Chaibat’s imprisoned wife, and Kevin’s girlfriend May who just might blow their cover.
Directed by Stanley Tong and written by Edward Tang, Ma Fibe and Yee Lee Wai, the well paced “Police Story 3: Super Cop” is a pretty standard undercover cop action movie with shootouts and explosions galore. In typical Jackie Chan movie fashion, the film is also scattered with the usual comedic hijinks (mostly involving Kevin trying to keep his police identity a secret). Cast members Jackie Chan, the now Academy Award winning Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung. The trio all deliver quality performances and it’s positively fun to see Chan and Yeoh on screen together (especially for action movie enthusiasts). Not only do they have great on screen chemistry, but it’s a blast to see them in action together.
Let’s face it though, you’re not turning on “Police Story 3: Super Cop” for the story or comedy. It’s all about the action and that is where this movie truly comes alive. The last third of the movie is essentially one long action sequence and it makes the entire movie worth watching. It has everything you could want- a car chase (with Michelle Yeoh’s Jessica hanging off the side of a truck), a rooftop fight, a motorbike, a helicopter (with Jackie Chan hanging on the ladder for dear life), and action on top of a moving train. It’s a thrilling sequence that features some of the most daring and exciting stunt work by Chan and company (not to mention first rate fight choreography by Stanley Tong).
Note: This set contains the original Hong Kong version and the U.S. version.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.35:1 2160p with Dolby Vision for the Hong Kong version. How do the prints look? 88 Films knocks it out of the park with these noteworthy prints that offer up impressive image clarity.
Audio Track: English 5.1 and Cantonese 1.0 for “Supercop” and Cantonese Dolby Atmos, Cantonese 1.0 and 2.0, and English 1.0 tracks for “Police Story 3: Super Cop.” How do they sound? The English 5.1 track is the best option for “Supercop” while the Cantonese Dolby Atmos track is the clear victor for “Police Story 3: Super Cop.” The Cantonese 1.0 tracks are decent, but the Cantonese 2.0 and English 1.0 tracks are flat.

The first time I saw that flick was in 1997 on home video as “Supercop”, the North American version by Dimension Films. Eventually I saw Police Story III: Super Cop on cable TV subtitled in English.
Both versions are on this set!
