Rick And Morty Season 6 Blu-ray Review

“Rick And Morty” bounces back from a rocky fifth season.

In the 10 episode season 6 of the Adult Swim adult animated series, the sci-fi comedy series has no shortage of story as plots include  everyone being returned to their original dimensions, Morty being trapped in a virtual reality game, an affair between Space Beth and Beth, a sleepwalking device, an unsettling fortune from a fortune cookie, dinosaurs from space, Rick and Morty stuck in the meta world, a villain named Pissmaster, Morty becoming a Knight of the Sun (who have a not so nice tradition), a lightsaber, robots, and Rick Prime.

Season 6 marks co-creator and voice actor of both Rick and Morty Justin Roiland’s final season on the series after being embroiled in controversy and scandals that led to his dismissal. How the show will look, sound or play out in the future with the other co-creator Dan Harmon remains to be seen, but with season 6, the show is much improved over the clunky season 5. Granted, this sixth season of the cult hit isn’t likely to change anyone’s mind on the series. If you’re a fan you can expect more of the same shenanigans. If not, the zany “Back To The Future” esque comedy is still convoluted, frantic, and busy and the jokes are still full of toilet humor. Personally speaking, the humor is often not my cup of tea, but the sci-fi concepts about time travel, life, family, reality and alternate dimensions are clever and well thought out.

In terms of the episode, the real standout (for me at least) is “Full Meta Jackrick.” This trippy episode (complete with a dazzling opening credit sequence) is all about fourth wall breaking, fiction, reality, pop culture references, and creators. There’s a lot going on here (perhaps too much), but it’s quite the ride.

The animation work by Green Portal Productions is exceptional. Although the human character models are pretty standard, the wild worlds, alien designs, and vibrant colors make the show look like pure eye candy.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The colorful series pops in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the voice acting to the sound effects, this 5.1 track delivers.

* 10 quick featurettes on all 10 episodes.
* 3 “Anatomy Of A Scene” segments on the episodes “Bethic Twinstinct,” “Night Family,” and “Analyze Piss” which covers the making of scenes from each of the 3 episodes.
* “Rick And Morty: Inside Season 6”- A 9 minute feature on how the season was made remotely along with story plots.
