Dig Blu-ray Review

A quality cast can’t save the generic “Dig.”
Not to be confused with last year’s “Dig” starring CareyMulligan and Ralph Fiennes, 2022’s “Dig” is a thriller that begins with a father (Scott) whose rage with a stranger claims the life of his wife and causes his daughter to go deaf. The story jumps ahead one year later where Scott is trying to patch things up with Jane who isn’t talking. In order to make some money, Scott accepts a job to strip a house and dig for a mystery man named Vic. The job isn’t what it seems, however, as the location is actually a stash house. On top of that, Victor and his girlfriend Lola are deranged killers who are after something on the property and are using Scott and Jane to find it.
Directed by K. Asher Levin, “Dig” is another by-the-numbers, low-budget, minimal location movie made for the home video market. It’s a pretty standard hostage thriller with very little story to speak of. Most of the runtime, the characters are simply squabbling or biding their time until the inevitable intense conclusion (which is predictable to say the least). There needed to be something MORE. The script by Banipal and Benhur Ablakhad attempts to have some characterization with the father-daughter forgiveness element, but it feels rushed and forced here.
“Dig” does boast a fine cast here with Thomas Jane, Emile Hirsch, Liana Liberato, and Harlow Jane. Everyone is pretty solid here considering they don’t have much to work with, but it’s clear that Hirsch is having the most fun as a fast-talking scenery chewing criminal Vic.
