A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon Blu-ray Review

“A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” is a charming sequel.

In this sequel to “Shaun The Sheep Movie,” the titular big hearted sheep who always seems to stir up trouble encounters an alien creature named Lu-La that is in need of help. Shaun decides to help her (along with Bitzer the dog) but their journey is easier said than done. Shaun isn’t the only one to notice an alien presence as the town of Mossingham becomes swept up by alien fever. Even Shaun’s home at Mossy Bottom Farm is getting in on the excitement as Farmer John decides to create an alien themed theme park called Farmageddon. The appearance of aliens has also caught the eye of the Ministry Of Alien Detection (AKA M.A.D.) who is hot on Lu-La’s trail (dun dun dun).

Directed by Richard Phelan and Will Becher and scripted by Mark Burton and Jon Brown, “A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” may not quite be on par with the beloved first film, but the sequel is still a good old fashioned Aardman stop-motion animation gem. There’s no denying this sequel veers off into strange territory with the inclusion of aliens, but writers Burton and Brown playfully poke fun at alien movies and alien conspiracies. Of course, viewers can expect plenty of fun antics involving everything from pizza to a grocery store and the usual sight gags as well.

What really makes ‘Shaun’ work so well though is that it goes against the grain of other animated films. There’s a refreshing lack of dialogue which makes the writers think outside the box, there’s no movie star stunt casting for voice roles, the movie ends in a heartwarming fashion, and, more importantly, the movie focuses on character above all else. ‘Shaun’ has endured for so long because he’s such a beloved character that audiences want to see more of. Hopefully, there will be more adventures to come.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a truly gorgeous and colorful transfer from this Shout! Factory release. It’s always great to see so many little Aardman animation details in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The sound effects and noises sound sharp.
