Silent Night Blu-ray Review

“Silent Night” falls flat.

In “Silent Night,” Neil and Simon and their 3 sons Art and twins Hardy and Thomas are hosting a Christmas dinner at a picturesque countryside home for friends/couples Sandra and Tony and their daughter Kitty, Alex and Bella, and Sophie and James. This isn’t an ordinary Christmas feast, however, as the world is ending and everyone is gathered together for one last night to celebrate truth and love. Let’s just say it doesn’t turn out that way as secrets are revealed, fears materialize, and emotions run high.

As a Christmas movie, “Silent Night” is sort of the anti-“Love Actually”. It’s a dark, cynical “comedy” that plays more like “The Celebration” with an apocalyptic bent. Writer/director Camille Griffin’s premise is certainly ripe for exploration, but the filmmaker struggles to do much with the concept. There’s something missing in this dysfunctional family story. Along with a bleak and predictable ending, the movie seemingly abandons it’s comedic edge (not that it was very present to begin with). There’s a strange mixture of genres afoot here and Griffin seems unsure of how to bind them together. It doesn’t help that the characters never really resonate nor is the movie remotely visual (unless you count the horrendous CGI). It all feels like one big missed opportunity.

The cast is at least quality and they certainly do the best with the material they are given. Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Lily-Rose Depp and Lucy Punch turn in fine performances, but it’s Annabelle Wallis (as the loud mouth Sandra) and Roman Griffin Davis (as the fearful young kid Art) who deliver the best performances. They also have the most developed characters.
