The Flash Season 7 Blu-ray Review

“The Flash” stumbles in season 7.
“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.”
In the 18 episode seventh season of the CW DC TV series, there are essentially 3 mini-arcs instead of the usual one overarching plotline (and or villain). The first 3 episodes conclude the Mirror Master arc from season 6. The second arc deals with the Speed Force coming back alongside 3 new Forces found in the characters of Fuerza, Deon, and Psych. The third arc is all about the villainous Godspeed and the future children of Barry and Iris- Nora and Bart. Spread throughout the season are also some major plots involving Wells (and his various versions), Cisco and Kamilla moving away, Cecile and a mask, Frost being arrested, Frost and Chillbaine, Allegra’s cousin Ultraviolet, Chester becoming a bigger part of Team Flash, to name a few key ones.
With its seventh season, “The Flash” has run its course (pun intended). For years this was my favorite of the CW DC TV series, but it’s clear the show has run out of creative juice. This entire season felt like a jumbled mess of stories that were thrown together just to see what would stick. Some of the arcs go nowhere too like Frost going to jail for a very brief period. Far too many characters pop up in this show too especially during the Speed Force arc. It often felt like Flash was taking a backseat in his own series and that’s not a good sign.
The departure of Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Wells (Tom Cavanagh) was also a giant blow to the show. Yes, they’ll both pop up every now and then, but the show just can’t survive without them. Grant Gustin (the titular character) and Candance Patton (Iris) may be the stars, but Valdes and Cavanagh were the heart of the series. They brought humor and depth to the show. Cavanagh was frankly incredible in every season. Not only was his acting versatility a pleasure to watch, but I loved seeing what new character he would do next. The sheer amount of Wells characters he portrayed on this series has to be any actor’s dream.
We know that season 8 is happening and I feel like it has to be the last one. If it is the end, I hope the writers can redeem themselves and go all out because season 7 was frankly a rough ride for even the biggest fans.
