Prodigal Son Season 2 Blu-ray Review

Not even Michael Sheen can save “Prodigal Son.”
In the 13 episode second and final season of the Fox procedural drama series “Prodigal Son,” there are numerous plot threads spread throughout the season such as the aftermath of Endicott’s murder and cover-up in season 1, FBI Profiler turned NYPD Criminal Psychologist Consultant Malcolm being haunted by his past, dark side, and actions, Malcolm’s father Martin (a brilliant serial killer serving time in a psychiatric hospital), Detectives JT and Dani, Malcolm’s sister Ainsley (a TV reporter) and alcoholic mother Jessica, Internet detectives known as the Killabusters, Vivian (a Claremont Psychiatric Hospital Medical Doctor), a prison break, and cases involving an executioner, a murdered priest, Headmaster, inmate, a retired Chess Grandmaster, the Debutante Slayer, The Woodsman, among other murders.
Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver’s “Prodigal Son” is another procedural with a hook to trick the audience into watching yet another procedural. With “Prodigal Son” it’s about an FBI Consultant (Malcolm) that is an expert in tracking down serial killers who just happens to have a serial killer father (Martin). Basically, the show plays like an inferior mix of “Hannibal,” “Dexter” and “Columbo” complete with typical dark murder of the week cases, outlandish family drama, exaggerated acting, violence, and corny dialogue that you could only get more from network fare. If you’re into this type of program, by all means check out “Prodigal Son.” The series did develop a fanbase before its untimely cancellation.
The series does have one shining star in Michael Sheen. The ever underrated actor is the only thing worth tuning in for in my humble opinion. His versatility, his charisma, his screen presence are far more engaging than the actual material he has to work with. He deserves so much more than this series. Hopefully now he can get some better parts now that the show has ended.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.0:1 1080p. How does it look? The episodes look solid in hi-def.
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track does the job.
Extras:
* “Killer Genes”- A featurette that explores the father-son dynamic of the series.
* “Emerging From Blood”- This extra covers the season 1 finale and the exploration of those threads in season 2.
