Mare Of Easttown Season 1 DVD Review

Haven’t I seen this before?

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.”

In the 7 episode limited series (which could potentially continue on) “Mare Of Easttown,” the story revolves around a former local basketball star turned troubled Sgt. Detective (Mare) in Easttown, Pennsylvania. Mare is struggling both personally and professionally. Personally, she is going through a divorce, is grieving the loss of her son and is in an ugly custody battle over her grandson. Professionally, she has been unable to crack the cold case of a missing girl (Katie) which has been re-opened. Katie’s disappearance isn’t the only case Mare is on, however, as two new cases emerge with the death of a teen mom (Erin) and another missing girl (Missy). Elsewhere in the series, expect to see plots involving fellow Detective Colin Zabel, Mare being suspended, and Mare’s potential romantic interests.

Written and created by Brad Ingelsby (with all episodes directed by Craig Zobel), HBO’s “Mare Of Easttown” has gone on to become a popular award-winning series, but I can’t say I share that enthusiasm.

We can all agree Kate Winslet is in peak form here as she sinks her teeth into this layered character. We can also agree the supporting cast is top notch with Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson, Guy Pearce and Jean Smart (who is having a career renaissance) turning in fine work.

As for the series itself, I feel like we’ve seen this all before. It’s a dour small town crime-drama/mystery/whodunit with a damaged Detective and suspects galore filled with twists, cliffhangers, dark secrets, lies, murder, drama, you know the drill. This is the type of material that comes out on a weekly basis in the UK. If you’re a fan of this genre of shows then “Mare Of Easttown” is 100% for you. If you’re tired of these mystery/Detective series then ‘Mare’ won’t do much to change your mind about them.
