The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run Blu-ray Review

“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run” will appeal to fans of the long running franchise.

“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run” is the third feature from Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies. In this adventure, SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) goes on a journey with Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke) and Otto the robot to find his lost beloved pet snail Gary. Gary is in the possession of the vain King Poseidon due to a fiendish plot by Plankton. With SpongeBob out of the way, Plankton hopes to obtain the Krabby Patty recipe all while the Krusty Krab business plummets without SpongeBob working there. Other subplots involve other characters attempting to help SpongeBob (won’t say who) and flashbacks to SpongeBob’s youth.

Written and directed by Tim Hill, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run” is very much a tribute to the late creator Stephen Hillenburg. It’s a positive movie about friendship and love that feels quite needed in these dark times. Longtime fans are sure to be moved and amused by this entry as it feels like it touches upon the entire history of the show. Of course, ‘Sponge’ also features tons of fan favorite characters such as Sandy, Karen, Squidward and so on.

Now, I’m not some big SpongeBob fan so I can’t say the movie always worked for me. Some of the humor can be grating, there are some weird live-action/animation hybrid moments (the Danny Trejo sequence for instance), and the story itself didn’t feel quite grand enough for a feature film. With that said, there’s enough here to admire still with Matt Berry voicing King Poseidon, the bizarre tumbleweed character Sage played by Keanu reeves, Weezer tunes, and a spot on parody of the David Attenborough nature documentaries.

In terms of the animation, I really liked the CGI animation/live-action blend from a visual standpoint. Sure, the standard 2D animation will always be synonymous with the series, but the CGI style gives it an almost claymation esque vibe that I think works well for the characters and environments like Bikini Bottom. It gives it more dimension.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a crystal clear transfer.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? SpongeBob is always nothing if not a loud series and this 5.1 track handles all the audio well.
