Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Blu-ray Steelbook Review

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is a teen classic.

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” a new Blu-ray steelbook edition has been released. Of course, I’m sure everyone knows the story of  writer/director John Hughes’ classic movie at this point. It’s the story of the titular teen who fakes being sick in order to have the day of his life in Chicago with his girlfriend (Sloane) and his best friend (Cameron). While the 3 go to everything from a Cubs game to a parade, the high school Principal (Rooney) thinks Ferris is lying and hopes to catch him in the act. The sister of Ferris (Jeanie) also believes Ferris is lying and wants to expose him as well.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is about as perfect as a movie can get. Thewitty  script by John Hughes is full of hilarious dialogue and uses the fourth wall break arguably better than any other movie has. Even to this day it feels like a fresh take on the teen movie especially considering how often it has been imitated but never duplicated. Not to mention just how quotable it is.

And then there’s the cast. Has Matthew Broderick ever been better than he was here? That’s certainly up for debate, but he exudes cool and charm. He’s the ultimate rebellious teen. Alan Ruck is also great as the scene stealing and odd hypochondriac friend Cameron. Mia Sara is really charming as Sloane. Jennifer Gray amuses as the bitter sister of Ferris Jeanie. Jeffrey Jones  is a great foil to Ferris as Principal Rooney.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? ‘Ferris’ has been re-released on Blu-ray multiple times at this point. The picture quality is certainly the best ‘Ferris’ has ever looked despite the print having numerous flaws ala dirt specs and scratches. With all of that said, isn’t it time for a 4K release at this point?

Audio Track: Dolby TrueHD 5.1. How does it sound? Expect a nice crisp 5.1 track.
