Wrong Turn (2021) Blu-ray Review

“Wrong Turn” takes the franchise in a refreshing new direction.
2021’s “Wrong Turn” isn’t a new sequel but rather a reboot of the franchise that comes from the same writer as the original 2003 “Wrong Turn” Alan McElroy. Gone are the backwoods inbred cannibal mutant killers though. Instead, the main cast of characters (3 young couples) venture out on the Appalachian Trail for a hike. Of course, the 6 people venture off trail to seek out a Civil War Fort and that’s when bad things begin to happen as they encounter dangerous traps and a secret society known as The Foundation. What happens next? Well, that’s for you to find out!
Directed by Mike P. Nelson, “Wrong Turn” (2021) is a much needed revamp of the franchise that had grown increasingly stale. While some fans may scoff at the removal of the inbred cannibal killers, this new take is a horror movie with something to say. It’s not a mindless slasher but rather an unnerving tale about intolerance, judgments, America, violence, and morals. Again, I don’t want to give too much away, but seeing how the story unfolds is part of what makes this intense movie work as well as it does.
As engaging as “Wrong Turn” may be, it’s not without its flaws. The characterization is minimal as tends to be the case with many horror films and there are the usual questionable character actions. Additionally, even though the movie runs 110 minutes (which is abnormal for horror), it does feel a bit rushed in the end. Granted, there’s never a dull moment here, but the story does devolve into a death fest.
Cast wise, there are a few stand-outs here with star Charlotte Vega (who shows a great deal of range as Jennifer), Matthew Modine (Jennifer’s father), and Bill Sage who plays the creepy Foundation leader Venable.
