Wander DVD Review

“Wander” is too out there for its own good.

After being asked to investigate the death of a mother’s daughter, a mentally unstable conspiracy theorist Private Eye (Arthur) ventures to the small town of Wander where he allegedly uncovers a larger conspiracy/cover-up involving chip implants. It soon becomes clear though that this might all be in Arthur’s head…or is it?

Stylishly directed by April Mullen, “Wander” is a wild and frantically edited thriller that is more than a little clunky. Despite tackling topical subjects about immigration, mental illness and conspiracy theories, the subjects are frequently undercut by a truly outlandish (and perhaps exploitive) Tim Doiron script that ultimately contains far too many familiar cliches. For anyone who’s ever watched a thriller, all the boxes are checked in this movie ala the small shady town with secrets, a protagonist dealing with loss that haunts him and a “what is real and what isn’t” atmosphere.

The big draw for “Wander” is undoubtedly the cast which contains the 2 Two-Face actors (Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart), and Heather Graham. Graham and Jones don’t have a ton to do here, but Eckhart gives one of the most peculiar performances as of late. He certainly makes some choices here as a wild eyed, paranoid, gruff voiced PI. It’s the farthest thing from subtle but it’s fascinating to watch.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? The contrasting color scheme of the movie doesn’t look the best in standard definition, but it’s a decent enough transfer.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The 5.1 track does the job.

The lone extra is a Digital copy.
