Spree Blu-ray Review

“Spree” is no joyride.

In “Spree” viewers follow a young man named Kurt who is driven to be a social media star. Alas, he can’t seem to get to the next level unlike a kid he used to babysit (Bobby) who has found some success. In order to get more attention, the troubled Kurt essentially snaps and decides to do a special livestream in which he goes on a killing spree as a rideshare driver for the company Spree (not exactly subtle is it?). Elsewhere in the story we follow a comedienne (with some level of social media fame) named Jessie who crosses paths with Kurt and becomes an integral part of the story.

You can’t fault “Spree” for being ambitious as it tackles topical subjects such as social media, fame, egotism, and the desire to be seen. All of these topics are ripe for exploration but the deeply cynical “Spree” only tackles these concepts on a surface level. This black comedy/horror film simply tries too hard to be both funny and relevant as it pokes fun at the dark side of social media. The problem is writers Gene McHugh and Eugene Kotlyarenko (who also directed the film) don’t do enough with the material as it feels entirely played out and repetitious very early on in the runtime. Most of the time you feel as if you are watching a wannabe “Black Mirror” episode that drags on longer than it needs to.

On the plus side, actor Joe Keery of “Stranger Things” fame makes it all watchable. The up and coming actor really commits to the part and shows range as this demented and out of control character who is desperate for stardom.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The video quality varies from scene to scene with all of the different camera set-ups, but the film generally looks crisp in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Don’t expect an A+ level audio track, but it does the job.

Extras include a passionate solo commentary by director Eugene Kotlyarenko 11 “Kurtsworld96 Social Media Content” videos including a shoe unboxing, a vape review, a room tour and so on.
