Lego DC Shazam!: Magic And Monsters Blu-ray Review
“Lego DC Shazam!: Magic and Monsters” is fun for the whole family.
In “Lego DC Shazam!: Magic and Monsters,” Shazam! (perfectly voiced by Sean Astin) certainly has his hands full. Not only does he meet the Justice League for the first time (comprised of Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman), but the villainous Mr. Mind led Monster Society of Evil is lurking about causing chaos. The story kicks in when the Society ends up turning the JL into kids who become mind controlled to do the Society’s bidding. The only kid who manages to escape this is Batman who later teams up with Shazam! to try and stop the Society and restore the JL back to their original selves. Given that Black Adam is on the cover of this movie, you know he will play into this story somehow too.
Although designed for a younger audience, the Matt Peters directed “Lego DC Shazam!: Magic and Monsters” has enough appeal for people of all ages. Granted, I think kids will have a blast seeing their favorite heroes as kids the most, but there’s plenty of deep cut character cameos and fun jokes (like the Captain Marvel and Batexemption bits) that will appeal to an older audience and or longtime DC fans.
The Jeremy Adams scripted story does a good job of mixing in the Shazam! mythology while also telling a larger story about trust, secret identities, and the Justice League. It sounds like a lot to cover in a mere 81 minutes, but it all fits together well.
