Adopt A Highway Blu-ray Review

Ethan Hawke shines in the underwhelming “Adopt A Highway.”

After serving 21 years in prison for the 3 strike law, the reserved and socially awkward Russ is released back into a world that is foreign to him. While working at a burger joint, Russ feels lost and unsure of what to do with his life. He needs to find people to connect with and face his past, but can he?

Written and directed by Logan Marshall-Green, “Adopt A Highway” is a relatively short movie that has its heart in the right place, but one can’t shake the feeling that a lot was left on the table. While the story does touch on a fair amount of subjects including human connections, the legal system, human kindness and finding one’s self and one’s place in the world, everything feels short changed. The movie ends just as the story is just starting to be explored. Granted, it fits with the notion that Russ is beginning his life anew, but from a cinematic perspective, you’re left wanting more from a storytelling perspective.

The one saving grace here is star Ethan Hawke who crushes it as per usual. He gives such an understated and quiet performance which is unusual given that the characters he tends to play are rather wordy. With the character of Russ, Hawke manages to say so much without saying a word with his mannerisms and body language. Simply put, he proves yet again why he is one of the best actors around.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? It’s not the most picturesque movie, but the transfer is solid.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? In a word, adequate.

The only extras are trailers for other RLJE Films titles.
