The Simpsons Season 19 DVD Review

The 19th season of “The Simpsons” offers up some gems.

It’s hard to believe, but “The Simpsons” have now been around for 30 years. In honor of this grand achievement, Fox has released season 19 on DVD (the first home video release in 2 years). In the 20 episode season, viewers can expect stories about Homer saving Mr. Burns, Homera becoming an opera singer, a prisoner, Milhouse, Sideshow Bob, elections, Marge and Homer’s past, Valentine’s Day, pranks, Lisa in ballet school, a cow, Sundance Film Festival, Homer’s memory loss, Homer’s mother Mona, and more. Of course, there are guest stars aplenty with the likes of Zooey Deschanel, Weird Al, Jack Black, Steve Buscemi, Stephen Colbert, etc.

Fans and critics alike always mention the first 7 or so seasons of “The Simpsons” being the best, but that doesn’t mean the later seasons are devoid of any highlights. In fact, the nineteenth season has several notable episodes. “Treehouse of Horror 18” delights as always as it spoofs “E.T.,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Seven” and even Fox promos. “Husbands and Knives” is a tale of two episodes, but I appreciated the deep cut comic book references and appearances by Alan Moore, Dan Clowes, and Art Spiegelman. “Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind” is a nice mixture of “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” while “Any Given Sundance” is a fun jaunt that features indie cult director Jim Jarmusch!

Overall Thoughts: If streaming isn’t your thing, Simpsons fans should be happy that the first 20 seasons are now available on home video. Will season 21 and beyond be released? Time will tell, but hopefully fans will be able to complete their collections someday.

Note: The interior box art and DVD menus contain really cool Bill Plympton artwork.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.33:1. How does it look? A fine standard def transfer with a few noticeable defects. Sadly, there was no Blu-ray release for this season.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? A quality 5.1 track with the action oriented scenes being particularly lively.

Extras:
* A booklet with episode and content guides.
* Commentary on all 20 episodes by the likes of Al Jean, Joel H. Cohen, David Silverman, Ralph Sosa, Matt Groening, Yeardley Smith, Dana Gould, Topher Grace, Carolyn Omine, and many more.
* “Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind” in French, Italian, Portuguese and Hungarian.
* “Thank You”- A super quick thank you message to the fans.
* “A Plea For Sanity’- An intro by Matt Groening.
