Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle Blu-ray Review

Charlie.jpg

“Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” is a prime example of how not to make a sequel.

Natalie (Cameron Diaz), Alex (Lucy Liu), and Dylan (Drew Barrymore) return for a sequel to the 2000 film which itself is based off the popular TV series. In this outing, the trio must uncover sought after H.A.L.O. rings, face off against a former Angel (Madison) gone bad, and evade mobs (including one led by Dylan’s former lover Shamus).

With the 2019 “Charlie’s Angels” releasing in a few weeks, Sony/Columbia Pictures is releasing the 2000 “Charlie’s Angels” on 4K and the sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” on Blu-ray for the first time. Why the sequel isn’t getting a 4K release, I have no idea.

While I haven’t seen the 2000 “Charlie’s Angels” since its release, I remember it being a mildly diverting action film with a scene stealing Crispin Glover. I remember ‘Full Throttle’ being a very flat sequel and now having revisited it here for this Blu-ray release, I can safely say it was worse than I ever remembered. It’s not hard to see why this installment effectively killed the franchise until now because it’s essentially a high energy cartoon music video helmed by director McG that contains literal cartoon sound effects. The John August and Cormac and Marianne Wibberley scripted movie is severely dated 16 years later with embarrassing puns, gravity defying wirework stunts that rip-off “The Matrix,” stereotypes, a “U Can’t Touch This” dance scene that is a decade too late, atrocious CGI, a sloppy and hurried plot, and blatant oversexualization of its heroes.

The only thing the sequel has going for it is the epic cast which contains the likes of Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Crispin Glover (who is tragically barely in this one), Bernie Mac, Robert Patrick, John Cleese, Shia LaBeouf, Demi Moore, Luke Wilson, Matt LeBlanc, Justin Theroux, Robert Forster (rest in peace) along with many, many cameos. It’s clear the main 3 leads are having a blast here and it’s always gratifying to see butt-kicking female heroes, but they are incredibly wasted in this mind-numbing action fare.

Note: This Blu-ray disc comes with the theatrical and unrated cuts of “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.”

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.40:1 1080p. How does it look? The super bright colors look sharp with this quality hi-def transfer.

Audio Track:5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A fittingly loud track for a loud movie.
