A Score To Settle Blu-ray Review

Nicolas Cage makes “A Score To Settle” watchable.

After spending 19 years in prison for taking a murder wrap for a crime boss (Max), Frank is released back into the world albeit with a case of fatal insomnia. While a free man, Frank uncovers the money that he is owed, tries to make amends with his son, live it up with his newfound riches, and also seek vengeance against those that have wronged him.

Directed by Shawn Ku, “A Score To Settle” is better than the average direct to home video movie. Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s a particularly good movie, but it does mean it has some merit. First and foremost, Nicolas Cage carries the movie on his back. For the most part, he plays it straight here, but as many are no doubt wondering, there are more than a few Cageisms here. You can witness things like the legendary actor eating a carrot, imitating a car engine, screaming the word beef multiple times, quoting a “Robocop” line, and even some singing and piano playing. These are all joyous moments to behold.

Script wise, it’s a pretty standard redemption/vengeance tale, but there is one big twist that may catch some viewers off guard (in a good way). The problem with the script by John Stuart Newman is that it tends to meander as if it needs an edit. Frank’s past is also slowly unraveled which is a bold choice albeit a bit of a clumsy one as it makes things initially unclear when they probably don’t need to be.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a solid hi-def transfer.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track does the job.

Extras:
* RLJE Films trailers
* A featurette on the story and characters.
* “On Set”- A bonus feature that contains set footage, interviews, discussions about on set life, and more.
* “Sins Of The Father”- An extra about the emotional and twisty story.
