Lego DC Batman: Family Matters Blu-ray Review

Lego

“Lego DC: Batman: Family Matters” has its moments.

“Lego DC Batman: Family Matters” (which is not connected to “The Lego Batman Movie”) is a new animated feature film aimed at a younger audience. In this adventure, Bruce Wayne is bored with being Bruce Wayne and would rather be spending more time as Batman. As such, he is evading responsibilities and even decides to sell Wayne Enterprises. Meanwhile, the villainous Red Hood has planted 5 bombs/traps around Gotham City and the Bat family (Nightwing, Batman, Robin, Batwoman and Batgirl) try to stop it. As if that weren’t enough, there’s ANOTHER fiendish plot by Two-Face involving Wayne Enterprises.

“Lego DC Batman: Family Matters” is the type of movie that half works. As a lifelong Batman fan, it’s hard not to crack a smile at character and villain cameos, references to everything from the 60’s Batman series to “Batman: The Animated Series,” a poignant story that digs into the Batman family and even strange comedic moments like a random citizen (Fred) driving Batman around Gotham. Unfortunately, the elements surrounding the film’s charming moments don’t work quite as well.

It’s not uncommon for a comedy to contain sight gags, goofy jokes, and one-liners that don’t land as no comedy is perfect so I can excuse that. What is rather puzzling about this particular movie is some of the creative choices by writer Jeremy Adams. Simply put, I don’t buy some of the character actions here. I don’t believe that Bruce would stop wanting to be Bruce and be so selfish that he would sell his company. I don’t believe that Red Hood would be so obsessed with a single video game. They may seem like minor things, but they’re quite pivotal to the story being told here. The story also includes too many storylines for a movie that runs under 80 minutes. It’s almost like 3 movies in 1 which can feel a bit exhausting.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The colorful CGI animation pops in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This 5.1 delivers a satisfying audio experience.

Extras:
* DVD copy and Digital copy
* Build your own Lego mini Ultimate Batmobile (easily the coolest Lego inclusion yet)
* WB/Lego/DC trailers and a “Lego DC Batman: Family Matters” trailer
