The Loveless Blu-ray Review

Slow ride.

In this 1950s set biker movie, the story revolves around a gruff biker named Vance who stops off at a small southern town to meet-up with other bikers before they venture to Daytona together. While in this town, trouble begins to brew as the locals become unnerved by the presence of the bikers.

Co-written and directed by Monty Montgomery and Kathryn Bigelow (in her feature debut), “The Loveless” is a purposefully slow paced movie in which you are constantly waiting for something to happen. Alas, very little actually does. Granted, the movie is about life on the road, prejudice, pain, and aimless people going nowhere, but it’s far too minimalistic and lacking in character. You’re left wanting more and not in a good way.

One thing that I’m sure most will agree on, however, is that the direction by Montgomery and Bigelow is first rate. Bigelow’s keen eye for visuals and long shots was already quite apparent with this 1981 feature. Her artistic skill is only enhanced by the great period recreation production values too from the cars to the locals.

Acting wise, the cast doesn’t have a ton to do here, but the movie is noteworthy for featuring a young Willem Dafoe. Much like Bigelow, Dafoe’s talent is quite apparent here as well from his screen presence to his narration.

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? The 2K restoration offers up a quality upgrade with richer colors.

Audio Track: Lossless Mono. How does it sound? Expect a good amount of depth for a Mono track.
