Dick Tracy Forever Issue 2 Comic Book Review
Issue 2 of “Dick Tracy Forever” dishes up another good old fashioned dose of “Dick Tracy.”
Much like the format of the first issue of “Dick Tracy Forever,” writer/artist Michael Avon Oeming once again takes the anthology approach with issue 2. The first story titled “Dick Tracy And That Damned Watch!!” finds two criminals in prison (English Bob and Pirate Billy) talking about how Dick Tracy and, yep, you guessed it, his damned watch got them caught. Of course, even though they are in jail doesn’t mean they can’t be up to even more trouble…
The second story dubbed “The Two Dicks” finds Tracy looking into a plot involving established criminals, a missing scientist, Nazis, nerve gas, and a horrific plot. However, as the title suggests, Tracy isn’t the only Dick on the job. Who could the other be?
Oeming, colorist Taki Soma, and letterer Shawn Lee’s combined talents once again create a new “Dick Tracy” comic book with a newspaper comic vibe, a Golden Age comic feel mixed with a modern touch. The panels themselves are small which could be construed as a flaw, but I respect the traditional style everyone involved is going for. Still, it would be nice to see the art and story breathe more on the page with a bigger scope.
Story wise, there’s nothing revelatory here, but it’s nice to see two different stories that integrate familiar foes, the importance of Tracy’s watch, the skills Tracy possesses as a Detective, and Tracy’s dedication to being a Detective.
The comic also contains another maze, a cover art gallery, and a 4 page preview of “Usagi Yojimbo” #1.
