Coby DVD Review

“Coby” is an important documentary film.

Taking place in the past and the present (the present being the time the film was shot) in Ohio, “Coby” is a documentary film that centers around a young woman (Suzanna) who undergoes a transition to become a man (Coby and then eventually Jacob). Through this process, we see how Coby/Jacob’s tight knit family adjust and cope to the change. We also get more of a glimpse into the everyday life of Coby/Jacob who is now an adult paramedic with a loving partner (Sara).

For those expecting a deep and insightful story about transgender people or sexuality, that’s not really the story director Christian Sonderegger’s “Coby” tells. This is a very honest, short and to the point documentary about change, acceptance, family and identity. The film is told via video diaries of a young Suzanna who is undergoing testosterone injections and through footage of Coby/Jack now as an adult male. The bulk of the film features interviews with family members and day-in-the-life footage of Coby. It’s a film that really chronicles Coby’s journey and how his family has embraced the change.

While it’s true “Coby” could have dug deeper, I appreciated the fact that “Coby” is a more focused and intimate story. At the end of the day, this is a true life story that was meant to provoke discussion and hopefully educate those who may be in the dark about transgender people and it certainly succeeds in doing this.

Presentation: 1.78:1. How does it look? The video diaries are of lower quality but the newly shot footage looks impressive.

Audio Track: 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Dolby Digital. How does it sound? All that matters is you can hear all the interviewees.

Extras include trailers for “Coby” and other Film Movement titles and nearly 16 minutes of bonus footage.
