Star Wars: C-3PO Does Not Like Sand! Book Review

“Star Wars: C-3PO Does Not Like Sand!” will appeal to young “Star Wars” fan.

Written by Caitlin Kennedy, “Star Wars: C-3PO Does Not Like Sand!” is a children’s book that involves C-3PO, R2-D2 and BB-8 venturing to Tatooine together on a mission to scan the planet for General Leia. While there, Threepio predictably whines about sand and tries to take the mission seriously while R2 and BB enjoy their own fun adventures together.

This breezy and lighthearted story is what I’d envision a modern droid centric animated series to be like. It manages to stay true to the characters while also incorporating humorous situations, fun callbacks to various elements of the saga (particularly in Tatooine), and plenty of droid bantering and bickering. The only real downside here is that the story is very thin. The “mission” could have been more developed as it is quite vague. It’s really just an excuse for visual gags on Tatooine. Also, how do you not have a reference to Anakin hating sand here? Feels like a missed opportunity!

The art by Brian Kessinger perfectly reflects the cartoony and colorful tone and vibe that Kennedy’s story has. Kessinger manages to make the characters and environments look like their cinematic counterparts while also putting his own style to it all (like any artist should).
