Snake Outta Compton DVD Review

“Snake Outta Compton” bites.

In this horror-comedy/spoof movie, the story revolves around a rap group that is on the verge of an important record label audition. Unfortunately, their big plans are derailed big time due to a debt with the criminal Alley Jaw, run-ins with a crooked cop and his rookie partner, a giant snake that is on the loose (which was created by a nerdy scientist (Vurkel) with a growth ray), and, oh yes, people turning into snakes (don’t ask).

The glory days of parody films like “Airplane” seem to be a thing of the past as the subgenre has been through a rough decade or so with films like “Meet The Spartans” and now “Snake Outta Compton.” The best thing about this film is the title. Everything within this low-budget movie is nearly unwatchable. The goofy characters, cheesy CGI, cartoony sound FX, the woefully unfunny on the nose jokes, and the groan worthy potty humor makes the movie feel like it’s over 2 hours when it’s actually only 83 minutes. Even as a parody movie, “Snake Outta Compton” fails spectacularly as it pokes fun at “Snakes On A Plane,” “Training Day,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “Family Matters” (what is this the 90’s?). The only reference that even warranted a single laugh here is a “Troll 2” one (you’ll know if you are familiar with the bad movie gem).

I wish I could say the cast makes it at least watchable, but I can’t. They’re either trying too hard, doing the best they can with the embarrassing material, or are just downright awful.

Presentation: 2.35:1. How does it look? The movie already looks cheap on its own and the cheap DVD transfer certainly doesn’t help any.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? Mediocre at best. The song performances sound particularly lousy here.

Extras: * Lionsgate trailers * A laidback commentary by Hank Braxtan, Ricky Flowers Jr., Motown Maurice and Joston Theney. However, the sound from the movie is not muted so it’s an audible mess.
