The Flash Season 4 Blu-ray Review

“The Flash” continues to be the best CW DC TV series.

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.”

After 3 seasons of speedster villains, it was time for a change. In the 23 episode fourth season, that change comes when Team Flash faces off against the villainous The Thinker. This formidable foe is always outthinking everyone, but he’s even more dangerous with the fact that he’s taking powers from other metahumans AND building something that could change Earth (and not in a good way). Of course, the central storyline isn’t the only thing going on this season. Fans and viewers can expect stories involving: Barry returning from the Speed Force, Cisco and Gypsy’s relationship, a group of metahumans, a pregnancy, Elongated Man (who becomes integral to Team Flash), Caitlin/Killer Frost, Harry (Earth-2 Wells), Kid Flash, The Thinker’s wife Marlize, the 4 part Earth-X CW DC crossover event, Barry being arrested, Barry on leave from the Central City Police Department, Iris becoming a leader, and assorted other villains like Amunet Black.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “The Flash” is a prime example of a fantastic comic book TV show. There’s lovable characters, plenty of material that is actually lifted from the comics, an accessible show format, thrilling action, strong writing (see the bomb centric episode “Enter Flashtime” for reference), engaging season spanning arcs, and connections to other DC shows. Basically, it has everything you could possibly want.

Sure, one can argue the show has had its ups and downs throughout the four seasons, but even if villain storylines drag on for perhaps a bit too long as is the case with The Thinker, you’re always left invested due to the character drama and enticing cliffhanger endings.

At the end of the day, it really is the ensemble cast that elevates this show. Grant Gustin was born to play The Flash and I just can’t imagine anyone else in this role in this show. He’s the heart and soul of it. Tom Cavanagh is arguably the most talented member of the cast overall simply for the reason of how many characters he has had to play! He gets to have even more fun this season with the Council of Wells characters. Carlos Valdes (Cisco) was far and away the biggest surprise going into this show and he just might be my favorite character. He brings so much humor and fun to the series but can also deliver on the dramatic side too. Candice Patton (Iris) is at her very best in this fourth season as her character really gets the spotlight here. Danielle Panabaker also gets to flex her acting muscles as she goes from Caitlin to Killer Frost more. The best new addition to the cast this season is Hartley Sawyer as Elongated Man. It’s nice to see a new member of Team Flash and it’s equally nice to see someone who brings more comedy and fun to the show.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? It looks even better than the hi-def broadcasts!

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? There’s a lot going on here form the sound f/x to the music.

Extras: * Digital copy * The coolest bonus feature by far is the inclusion of all 4 episodes of the Earth-X crossover from “Supergirl,” “Arrow,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and obviously “The Flash.” * Deleted scenes from episodes 3, 4, 5, 12, 17, 20, 21, and 26. * An amusing gag reel * “Inside The Crossover: Crisis On Earth-X”- A 42 minute roundtable discussion between Hector Navarro and series producers Marc Guggenheim, Robert Rovner, Todd Helbing, and Phil Klemmer. * “The Elongated Man”- A featurette on the new character addition * “Flash Time On Amunet Black With Katte Sackhoff, Eric Wallace and Sterling Gates”- A video commentary on Amunet scenes and the character in general. * “The Fastest Mind Alive: The Thinker”- A featurette on season 4’s villain * An hour long best of collection of highlights from the DC TV panels from San Diego Comic-Con 2017

Overall Thoughts: The fourth season of “The Flash” is just as entertaining as the first three. Can’t recommend the show enough.

      • That’s excellent news, I assume the Blu- Ray’s for all the other Arrowverse shows will too.
