To Auschwitz And Back: The Joe Engel Story DVD Review

“To Auschwitz And Back: The Joe Engel Story” is a powerful documentary.

“To Auschwitz And Back: The Joe Engel Story” is a straight forward, short 42 minute documentary in which the titular Joe Engel is interviewed. In his own words, the Jewish Polish Holocaust survivor tells his heartbreaking story of survival as he suffered and witnessed unimaginable atrocities at the Warsaw Ghetto, Birkenau, and Auschwitz before eventually escaping, joining the resistance, being liberated by the Red Army, and moving to the U.S. (South Carolina) where he reunited with family members.

In these troubling and uncertain times that we live in, a film like “To Auschwitz And Back: The Joe Engel Story” is an ever important reminder of what has happened and how we should never forget the horrific events that took place. We should always learn from the past or else we are doomed to repeat it. That notion certainly seems very timely in light of current events.

In terms of the documentary itself, it’s a no frills documentary and that’s the way it should be. This is all about one man telling his incredible story. Yes, there is horrifying archival footage spliced in at times, but for the most part, the camera is set on Joe Engel as he tells his story. I’ll admit, it would have been interesting to hear more details about his time in the resistance (as well as other events), but the fact that we are hearing his captivating story at all is more than enough.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? A solid standard definition transfer.

Audio Track: Unspecified. How does it sound? The score and interviewees sound clear.

There are 2 extra features titled “The Warsaw Ghetto” and “Auschwitz” which contain the archival footage that is featured in this film.
