The Miracle Season DVD Review

“The Miracle Season” is a formulaic movie based on an emotional true story.

Based on a true story, “The Miracle Season” tells the story of the reigning championship winning Iowa City West High volleyball team that goes through a tragic situation when the jovial star/Captain Caroline dies in a moped accident. As the team and town grieves the loss, the players struggle to play and win any games. Under the guidance of coach Kathy, however, Caroline’s best friend and teammate Jenny steps up to be a leader and Captain to try and pull together another championship winning season in honor of Caroline.

While “The Miracle Season” is based on a touching and emotional true life story to be sure, the execution of the film leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, the movie has its heart in the right place, but if you’ve seen an inspirational Hollywood sports movie before, you won’t be surprised by how this one unfolds as it goes through all of the predictable beats. The movie also has numerous predictable elements ala the not so subtle score, a thrown in romance, a heavy emphasis on tear jerking moments, a team defying the odds, etc. As has been the case with many true life story films, the real footage of the people and events in the end credits are much more affecting.

In terms of the cast, the performances are fairly strong across the board. Danika Yarosh makes the biggest impression in the smallest amount of time as the spirited Caroline. Helen Hunt does a fine job as the coach although I do feel her character could have been more developed at times. William Hurt kind of walks through the role and certainly could have brought more to it, but he’s serviceable. Erin Moriarty has done fine work in projects like “Captain Fantastic” and “Jessica Jones,” but she struggles a bit in a leading role (especially alongside Danika). She still does a commendable job though.
