Are You Scared, Darth Vader? Book Review

“Are You Scared, Darth Vader?” is a dopey picture book.

Written and drawn by Adam Rex, the Disney/Lucasfilm Press released “Are You Scared, Darth Vader?” is a cutesy traditional picture/children’s book. The story finds the narrator questioning Darth Vader if he’s scared of everything from monsters to a group of children. Eventually, in the end, there appears to be something Vader does fear.

Upon reading “Are You Scared, Darth Vader?,” it was abundantly clear that this book is strictly for the target audience- kids. I’m all for seeing “Star Wars” centric media for all ages of fans, but, as an adult, it’s sometimes tough to swallow stories like this. Personally, I’m not a fan of seeing characters like Darth Vader watered down in a gimmicky story that presents the character in a rather groan worthy fashion (see the ending). Again, I’m sure kids will enjoy the surprises within the book’s pages, but I think there’s far better “Star Wars” kid centric books out there to choose from like “BB-8 On The Run.”

One thing ‘Vader’ does have going for it is beautiful artwork. As the book says “The characters in this book were drawn and painted in Photoshop with KyleBrush brushes, then superimposed over photographs of a swamp created with paper, clay, paint, moss, glue, sticks, foam, sponge and schmultz.” Suffice it to say, the pictures are unique, visually engaging, and easily the best aspect of the entire book.

“Are You Scared, Darth Vader?” is scheduled to be released July 3, 2018.
