Deep Blue Sea 2 Blu-ray Review

“Deep Blue Sea 2” bites.

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.”

A group of experts in their field (including shark expert Misty) are summoned to meet a wealthy pharmaceutical businessman (Carl Durant) to scope out his new project at a sea facility. Upon arrival, they soon discover that Durant is out of his depth as he attempting to create drugs and using dangerous bull sharks (and himself) as test subjects. These are no ordinary bull sharks, however, as they have become highly advanced and intelligent. After an accident at the facility occurs, well, I’m sure you can guess that all hell breaks loose.

I’m not sure what made WB make a cheap direct to home video sequel to a shark flick that was released 19 years ago, but here it is. The original film itself was largely forgettable save for SPOILERS Samuel L. Jackson’s character death and the ridiculous LL Cool J (and his parrot) character END SPOILERS. Alas, no one from the original film appears in this. In fact, the entire cast is comprised of no one you have ever heard of. Moreover, you will not care about any of these characters as there is little to no characterization.

Of course, no one is seeing this film for the characters, they’re seeing it for the sharks. While viewers and fans of the first film can expect a few grizzly death scenes, they aren’t worth wading through the rest of this sequel for. The greatest sin of “Deep Blue Sea 2” is that it’s just boring. It feels like it’s on auto-pilot from start to finish. It should be, at the very least, a fun and dopey killer shark movie, but it never is.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? This Blu-ray disc boasts a crisp transfer that is far better than this film deserves.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Clean.

Extras: * DVD copy * Digital copy * 5 minutes of deleted scenes * A 3 minute gag reel * “Deep Blue Sea 2, Death By Shark”- A featurette that contains interviews, film clips, discussions about the project, the usual stuff. * “Returning To The Deep, Making Deep Blue Sea 2”- A behind-the-scenes making of featurette. * Warner Bros. trailers
