Bosom Buddies: The Complete Series DVD Review

“Bosom Buddies” goes for cheap laughs.

After their home building is condemned, friends and advertising agency co-workers Kip and Henry are forced to look for a new home. They happen across the Susan B. Anthony Hotel but soon learn it’s for women only. To make a long story short, the two wind up dressing up as women and calling themselves Buffy and Hildy in order to live in the hotel for cheap rent. On top of that, Kip and Henry proclaim Buffy and Hildy to be their sisters. Throughout the 37 episode two season series run, plotlines involved hotel rules, Kip falling for Sonny (a stunning woman that lives in the hotel), dating, advertising business, Amy’s life and career (and her crush on Henry), Buffy and Hildy stop a robbery, Isabelle, jealousy, commercials, a high school reunion, Henry winding up in jail, vacations, practical jokes, families, and more.

The 1980 sitcom “Bosom Buddies” is most well known for helping launch the career of Tom Hanks and underrated actor Peter Scolari and, well, that’s really all it should be known for. The now un-PC cross-dressing sitcom is more or less a mixture between “Three’s Company” and “Some Like It Hot” only there’s very little humor to be found here. The jokes are dopey and cheap, the premise is extremely limited, and there’s not much meat to the show at all. It’s amazing they got 37 episodes out of this as the premise was exhausted after the first episode.

Of course, as is the case with any show really, if you grew up on this series and or have a fondness for it (and or Tom Hanks), then by all means pick up this affordably priced complete series and relive the show again.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 4:3. How does it look? The video quality is nothing to ride home about as the episodes look like they did when they were broadcast.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital Mono. How does it sound? It’s a standard Mono track. No more, no less.

Extras: CBS/Paramount TV series ads and a near 7 minute sales presentation for “Bosom Buddies.”
