Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie DVD Review

“Hey Arnold!” makes a welcome return with “The Jungle Movie.”

Any 90’s kids who grew up on Nickelodeon and Snick will likely have fond memories of the animated TV series “Hey Arnold!” When the series ended its run in 2004, however, fans were left with nagging questions. Now, fans can get some closure at long last with the hotly anticipated feature film “Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie.”

The Plot: Knowing his parents were last spotted in San Lorenzo, Arnold conveniently gets a chance to go there when he learns of a humanitarian video contest that has a winning prize for a class trip to San Lorenzo. As you can guess, Arnold and co. end up winning the contest and venturing to the jungle local To make a long story short, the trip turns out to be a trap by a certain individual who has his own nefarious plans. What will happen to Arnold and the others? That would be telling.

As a fan of the series, I can say that “Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie” is a mostly satisfying feature film follow-up to the TV series. I say mostly because there are a few moments I can do without such as Abner’s (the pig) journey to get help, Eugene’s allergies turning him into a giant bloated bell, and other puzzling random scenes that I won’t spoil.

Weird moments aside, the film is actually a rather touching, funny, and surprising journey that further explores the dynamic between Arnold and Helga AND finally uncovers the mystery of Arnold’s parents whereabouts. If you’re into the supporting cast of characters, worry not as everyone from Gerald, Phoebe, Phil, Gertie and Harold have their moments to shine as well.

In terms of the humor, there’s a lot that will undoubtedly make fans laugh. The outdated beeper business and Helga’s creepy video collection are among the stand-outs here. I was also rather amused and pleased by how this movie managed to pay tribute to past episodes. I won’t spoil how though!

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? Fans can expect a crisp standard definition transfer.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The 5.1 track does the job.

Sadly, no extras have been included.

Overall Thoughts: If you’re a fan of “Hey Arnold!,” I don’t see how you can’t enjoy “The Jungle Movie.” It’s got something for every fan.
