Table 19 Blu-ray Review

Table 19

“Table 19” is a mess.

Based on a story by the prolific Duplass brothers, “Table 19” tells the story of a random group of people seated at the titular table 19. There’s Eloise who is struggling to get over her ex (who is the best man at the wedding), a young and single kid named Renzo, a squabbling married couple Jerry and Bina, Walter (an ex-con on parole), and a nanny named Jo. At first no one seems to have anything in common other than they are all working through issues and drama in their life, but they soon form a strong bond.

“Table 19” is the type of drama-comedy that struggles with its own identity. While it offers up plenty in the way of drama, the attempts at comedy fall flat to say the least. As for the actual drama, it’s ineffective at best. You can see where everything is headed quite easily, the middle act meanders about, the situations feel so forced and phony, and the characters all feel one dimensional thereby making it hard to care about anything going on.

It’s a shame the film never quite connects as it contains a talented cast comprised of Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson, Stephen Merchant, June Squibb, Tony Revolori, Amanda Crew, and Wyatt Russell. Unfortunately, all of their talent goes to waste as they are dealt unchallenging characters.

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? The hi-def transfer is bright and colorful.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The crisp dialogue and music make this track a winner.

Extras: * DVD copy and Digital copy. * Fox trailers and a “Table 19” trailer. * 4 deleted scenes. * Still gallery. * 3 featurettes titled “Table of Rejects,” “Head of the Table” and “Table For Six” which contain film clips, interviews, story and character discussions, etc.
