Oklahoma! (1999) Blu-ray Review

“Oklahoma!” is a memorable stage production.

No, this is not the 1955 film version of “Oklahoma!” Instead, it’s a 1999 recording of a stage production from London featuring a young Hugh Jackman before he rocketed to movie stardom. Anyway, in case you don’t know the plot of this classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, the story involves two separate love triangles. There’s the story involving Curly and farm hand Jud vying for the affection of Laurey and the other story focusing on Ado Annie trying to choose between two suitors with Ali and Will. There’s other plots involving a big party and what not, but it’s mostly about romance, romantic games, and jealousy.

Storywise, “Oklahoma!” is nothing to ride home about, but so what? This classic musical has stood the test of time not for its story but for its incredible soundtrack which features the likes of “Oh What A Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” the title song, among others. They’re all incredibly catchy, well written, iconic, and are guaranteed to get stuck in your head.

Of course, the cast helps is instrumental in making this show come to life. As mentioned earlier, Hugh Jackman is indeed in this belting out show tunes and he’s fantastic. His charisma and powerful voice make it hard to believe this is the same guy in “Logan.” His accent is a little wonky at times but it’s easy to forgive. The rest of the cast is not to be forgotten as Maureen Lipman (Aunt Eller), Vicki Simon (Ado Annie) and the other cast members all knock it out of the park.

“Oklahoma!” is not without its flaws, however. The set is rather bland and low rent although perhaps that was done purposefully so as to not distract from the performers. Additionally, it is a LONG show that clocks in at nearly 3 hours. There are points where the show does drag a bit namely during the dance numbers, but as a whole, this is still a must see for fans of musicals.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The hi-def clarity is there, but expect to see a lot of grain.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A lively enough track.

The lone extra is the 24 minute “The Making Of Oklahoma!” featurette which clips from the show, interviews, discussions about the show, behind-the-scenes footage, and more.
