Tunnel DVD Review
“Tunnel” is an effective disaster movie.
“Tunnel” is a very simple disaster/survival movie about a husband/father/Kia Motors employee (Lee Jung-soo) who becomes trapped in a tunnel after it collapses due to poor construction. As Jung-soo tries to survive in his car while pieces of earth tumble around him, a rescue operation is launched. Can Jung-soo be located? Are there any other survivors in the tunnel? That would be telling.
For those expecting an action packed tunnel disaster movie ala “Daybreak,” the South Korean film “Tunnel” is certainly not like that. This is very much an intimate, dramatic, claustrophobic, and atmospheric film that focuses on characters. Obviously, Jung-soo has the majority of screentime here, but people from the outside world (namely Jung-soo’s wife and the lead rescue team member) are also a pivotal part of the story. It all has a sense of realism which makes the movie even more captivating.
As engaging as “Tunnel” is, it does have some issues near the end. Around the 80 minute mark, the movie begins to drag a bit as the drama goes a little overboard. The movie could have easily been trimmed 15-20 minutes to tighten the film up and to cut out some of the padding.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 16:9. How does it look? This DVD boasts an all around excellent transfer.
Audio Tracks: Korean Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 Stereo. How do they sound? The 5.1 track is obviously the one to go with here as the best quality sound is essential to watching this film.
The only extras are a “Tunnel” trailer and trailers for other Well Go USA films.
