The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Blu-ray Review

The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Blu-ray.jpg

The ninth season of “The Big Bang Theory” is surprising.

In the 24 episode ninth season of “The Big Bang Theory,” viewers can expect to see plenty of stories involving the ups and downs of Sheldon and Amy’s relationship, Penny and Leonard’s marriage, bachelor and bachelorette parties, Sheldon’s birthday, a hypothesis, Amy going on dates, a Spock documentary, Thanksgiving, Howard and Raj’s filk band, Penny’s job, Howard and Bernadette planning a possible house renovation, a party bus, Raj’s romantic troubles, a pregnancy, a cabin, a “Game of Thrones” viewing party, a wine-tasting trip, and family. Of course, Stuart and Kripke come into play every now and then too.

I’ve stated in the past that I am not the world’s biggest fan of “The Big Bang Theory.” Early on in its run, it was particularly off putting with its cheap scripted jokes, formulaic style, stereotypical characters, and often cartoony plot scenarios. Over the past couple of seasons, however, the show has seen a lot of growth from the writers and the characters (especially Sheldon). The ninth season in particular is very much about the core group of characters, their relationships, the changes in their lives and how it impacts them and their friends. It feels more like the writers are respecting these characters rather than mocking them and, as a result, it feels more adult and appealing.

Aside from the character storylines, there’s a lot of fun stuff here as well. As a “Star Wars” geek, I appreciated “The Opening Night Excitation” which dealt with the (at the time) forthcoming release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Equally enjoyable was the milestone 200th episode “The Celebration Experimentation” which features a great guest star appearance by Adam West. As per usual, there are also loads of memorable guest stars like Elon Musk, Stephen Merchant, Alessandra Torresani, Judd Hirsch and returning favorites like Bob Newhart, Wil Wheaton, Sara Gilbert, Stephen Hawking, Christine Baranski, and Laurie Metcalf. They might seem like gimmicky guest appearances on paper, but they work well in the context of the show.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? So much better than the broadcasts. This is the best way to watch the show.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The dialogue and laugh track are handled well with this 5.1 track.

Extras:
* Digital HD copy of the season.
* A code for 3 free season 10 episodes.
* The 2015 San Diego Comic-Con panel featuring Kunal Nayyar and a whole host of writers and staff members. This extra runs 26 minutes.
*”#JustAskBBT”- 2 segments with cast members answering fan questions.
* “Love Is Rocket Science”- A featurette about the various relationships (and their changes) in season 9.
* “The Big 200!”- A behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the 200th episode.
* “The Big Bang Theory Gives Back”- A 5 minute piece about the new scholarship they created at UCLA.
* A nearly 9 minute gag reel.

Overall Thoughts: The ninth season of “The Big Bang Theory” might very well be its best.
